{"id":423,"date":"2007-10-30T07:00:16","date_gmt":"2007-10-30T15:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=423"},"modified":"2007-10-30T07:00:16","modified_gmt":"2007-10-30T15:00:16","slug":"oracle-a-change-in-direction-in-records-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/oracle-a-change-in-direction-in-records-management\/","title":{"rendered":"Oracle:  Records Management For Every Occasion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last October at Oracle OpenWorld 2006 this blog <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Oracle OpenWorld 2006\" href=\"http:\/\/www.formtek.com\/blog\/?p=116\">reported <\/a>that Oracle&#8217;s records management strategy seemed to be going nowhere fast.  A year has passed and so has Oracle&#8217;s strategy.  One big change that happened last November was that Oracle <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Oracle buys Stellant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/corporate\/press\/2006_nov\/stellent.html\">bought <\/a>Stellant.  Subsequently Oracle has been revamping and respositioning Stellant technology as part of their Content offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Now a new version of the Oracle Universal Records Management 10g Release 3, formerly a Stellant product, is available.  It&#8217;s been a hit with Oracle partners and has been implemented by companies like Autonomy ZANTAZ, Wipro, Symantec, Iron Mountain, Mimosa Systems, and Jordan Lawrence.  Unlike other vendors, Oracle is trying to address all aspects of records management.  Guy Creese <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Balkanization of Records Management Vendors\" href=\"http:\/\/creese.typepad.com\/pattern_finder\/2007\/10\/oracle-announce.html\">notes <\/a>a &#8216;balkanization&#8217; of records management products with vendors that tend to create very specialized products in these segments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup\/archiving\/ILM<\/li>\n<li>Messaging<\/li>\n<li>Content management<\/li>\n<li>Electronic discovery<\/li>\n<li>Policy management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s often the case that enterprises have products from multiple vendors, and bridging the data between the systems can be a problem.  Oracle&#8217;s Universal Records Management product tries to solve that problem and is attempting to span across all of these segments.  But with prices ranging from $100-150,000 per server processor, Oracle is fairly pricey solution for many small companies looking to address their records management needs.  Oracle&#8217;s slogan had been &#8220;Content Management for the Masses&#8221;, but their pricing doesn&#8217;t seem to fall in line with that sentiment.<\/p>\n<div
