AJAX <\/a>— Asynchronous JavaScript and XML. It’s a technology that’s driven by the ubiquity of the desktop browser. AJAX Web20 user interfaces can be compelling, but the engineering behind the “oohs” isn’t always pretty.<\/p>\n

There are a lot of things wrong with AJAX. Like bloated hard-to-debug Javascript, and the myriad browser incompatibilities. It’s hard to maintain and it makes simple Web applications complex. So in some ways it’s insane that AJAX has taken off like it has.<\/p>\n

What are people thinking? It seems that they’re thinking that they need to go with the flow and adopt AJAX. BZ Research from SD Times took a survey of 574 software development managers and found that 78.5 percent said they were actively using AJAX in their Web development or had plans to do so. But so far, only 29.5 percent say that they’ve already deployed AJAX-based applications.
\nMany of the respondent commented that AJAX was attractive because it provides “enhanced usability” and gives a “great client-side experience”. But newer technologies like Microsoft’s Silverlight and Adobe’s Flex\/AIR may provide an even better user experience with more elegant engineering underneath the covers.<\/p>\n
