“ECM solutions have proven to be one of the most disruptive technologies, often requiring users to dramatically change the way they work,” says the 2013Q3 Forrester Wave Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Forrester report found that “the enterprise content management (ECM) market has continued to diversify, with vendors turning to solutions focused on business and transactional content technologies. End users are looking for ways to better manage and utilize their content, returning a faster, more definable return on investment (ROI)… Vendors are moving to address customer demand for less-complex deployments and ECM platforms that can quickly deliver results.”<\/p>\n

CMSWire quotes Ken Burns<\/a>, Hyland\u2019s Analyst Relations Manager, as commenting on the report that he thinks <\/a>that today’s ECM market is driven by smaller, more agile vendors. Many of the larger vendors spent years consolidating and buying the component features needed to build a complete suite of ECM functionality. But Burns says that those vendors now are struggling to keep pace with huge aging code bases, many of which require significant custom development to maintain.<\/p>\n

Forrester’s report noted that “organizations are moving away from the notion that an ECM suite will meet all their needs. It is hard to quantify the ROI of a suite without associating it to a specific business case. In a May 2013 survey conducted by Forrester, 44% of ECM professionals were unable to quantify the ROI for their ECM projects. Of those that were able to measure their ROI, most found benefits in transactional associated solutions that focused on automating processes and eliminating the bottleneck of paperwork, e.g., case management solutions that help automate a dynamic workflow process.”<\/p>\n
