Forrester\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/rdines\">Rachel Dines<\/a>, senior analyst, said that there are <a title=\"IT is grappling with being able to innovate\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cio.com\/article\/742743\/Software_Defined_Data_Centers_Aren_t_Enough_Says_Forrester\" target=\"_blank\">five areas of concerns that IT groups are grappling<\/a> with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need to develop a competitive advantage by growing innovation<\/li>\n<li>Need to respond to increased expectations of IT from employees and customers<\/li>\n<li>Cost of downtime<\/li>\n<li>Accountability to Shareholders<\/li>\n<li>Globalization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While many businesses see their future in increasing their ability to innovate, budgets and the constraints of maintaining their existing systems are preventing them from making big investments in more innovative technology.   Businesses spent about 48 percent of their IT budget on maintenance and operations in 2013, but said that in 2014 they\u2019d like to reduce that segment of spending to 41 percent.  A focus on maintenance and operations keeps them from being able to set aside time to innovate.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses also worry that IT isn\u2019t in sync with the direction that they need to go.  Dines <a href=\"http:\/\/www.channelweb.co.uk\/crn-uk\/news\/2305041\/it-hindering-not-helping-business-needs-study\">said that<\/a> \u201conly one in three believes that IT is well aligned to business needs. And 25 per cent of business leaders say that IT actually hampers their success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dines said that automation may hold the solution.  If the interactions required to maintain existing systems can be decreased through automation, skills and resources can be freed up to focus on innovation.<\/p>\n<div
