Global IT spending is expected to increase in 2014, reaching $2.14 trillion, a 5 percent increase over the IT spending levels of 2013.\u00a0 Spending growth in 2013 is expected to come it at about 4 percent, following a slightly stronger 2012 where spending grew at 5 percent.\u00a0 That is the forecast from IDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stephen Minton<\/a>, vice president of IDC’s Global Technology and Industry Research Organization (GTIRO), said that \u201cthis has been a tough year for many IT vendors, with infrastructure spending in the first half of 2013 proving weaker than previously expected.\u00a0 The overall industry has been propped up by continued strength in mobile devices, especially smartphones, but the slowdown in emerging markets was another headwind for infrastructure-focused tech firms on top of government sequestration in the US and continued sluggish growth in Europe.”<\/p>\n

Growth in 2013 is attributed primarily to growth of smartphones and tablets.\u00a0 When mobile phones are excluded from the figures, IT growth was only 2.6 percent this year.\u00a0 Spending on servers, storage and enterprise networks was just 1 percent this year but is expected to grow about 4 percent in 2014.<\/p>\n
