\nAnd among those competitors in the Open Source category, MySQL is leading the charge against Oracle’s flagship database product.<\/p>\n
In a survey sponsored by MySQL, and conducted among members of the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG<\/a>), the gradual spread of companies using Open Source products for their critical production systems is increasing. The number of organizations that are using Open Source for more than half of their applications grew from 9 percent to 13 percent. One third of those surveyed said that they are using an Open Source database in production. More than half of those surveyed expect to increase the usage of Open Source in the upcoming year. Two-thirds of the members cited cost as the main driver for its popularity.<\/p>\n Over the last few years MySQL has beefed up it capabilities and performance, and now it is getting

\nEarlier this year Google signed <\/a>the MySQL Contributor License Agreement. This is an interesting move because Google is a huge user of MySQL internally. Google is known to have customized and tweaked MySQL to be highly performant under heavy loads.
