Developers. Developers. Developers.
\nThat has been Steve Ballmer’s mantra for years. He has chanted it, sung it and danced <\/a>to it for years.<\/p>\n

Ballmer long ago realized that developers can make or break the success of a platform, and Microsoft’s enthusiasm towards recruiting developers has made Microsoft the most popular platform.<\/p>\n

What about Google? Google is trying <\/a>to capture market share from Microsoft, but some analysts say it isn’t working.
\n<\/p>\n

The estimate <\/a>is that worldwide there are about 8 million developers. Of those, only 3 million are considered to be “real developers”.<\/p>\n

To which platform are those developers gravitating? In the world of mobile, kit looks like Google has an edge.
\nIn a recent survey of 400 mobile developers, Google was rated number one, followed by Microsoft and Nokia as the preferred platform
\nfor doing mobile location-aware development.<\/p>\n

But, so in categories other than mobile<\/a>, Google still has a ways to go. Trip Chowdhry of Global Equities Research says that Microsoft
\nhas about half of the developers in their camp, with most of the other developers using enterprise technologies from Oracle, SAP, IBM
\nand other ERP vendors.<\/p>\n

Chowdhry estimates there are about a half million developers that don’t align themselves with the majors.
\nThese include those developers using software from Salesforce, Netsuite, Workday, Adobe and Nokia. And still more doing things with
\nYahoo!, eBay, Amazon, Google, Facebook and Bebo.<\/p>\n

To achieve the growth that Google wants, it will need to bring in more ISVs and consultants that recommend, customize and develop for
\ntheir platform. It’s these ISVs and associate companies that can help focus and magnify the force of a development platform.<\/p>\n
