IT has been accused of becoming irrelevant. It’s becoming common for non-IT business units to be initiating and managing IT purchases and vendor relationships. Off-premise SaaS offerings are accelerating the phenomenon and making it ever more easier for Business to directly engage IT services.<\/p>\n

Forrester <\/a>has found that 25 percent of non-IT executives are selecting and directly initiating and engaging with IT services, surprisingly a larger number even larger than the number of IT executives doing the same. IT seems to be focusing more on corporate infrastructure and architecture issues that they have become less involved with selecting applications that help solve business problems.<\/p>\n

From a company perspective it makes sense. Money spent on a business solution that can be turned on and off as needed is more attractive than a higher-risk build-it-yourself approach that requires staff to be hired and trained.<\/p>\n

This spells bad news for IT teams. Less involvement with the business side can only lead to less relevance and overall value to the company. At some point infrastructure projects will be viewed as commodity items that can also be easily outsourced. The rise of SaaS and outsourcing is accelerating this trend.\n<\/p>\n

While the trend is there, that’s not to say that IT will be going away anytime soon. Businesses don’t have many other alternatives now when considering items like security, compliance, performance and data integrity. But that is likely to change. The question is just how long it will take.<\/p>\n
