Global businesses are on track to spend $174.2 billion this year on cloud infrastructure and services. \u00a0That’s up 20% from the $145.2 billion of spending in 2013, according to IHS Technology<\/a>. \u00a0 Based on their report, spending is expected to increase by a factor of three from 2011 to 2017.<\/p>\n

The IHS report identifies current leaders in the cloud market space as\u00a0Amazon.com, Google and Microsoft, specialty vendors like\u00a0Dropbox and Carbonite in the cloud storage space, and\u00a0Salesforce.com and Workday in the software application space.<\/p>\n

Jagdish Rebello<\/a>, analyst at\u00a0IHS, said that\u00a0“with the cloud touching nearly every consumer and enterprise around the globe, spending for cloud-related storage, servers, applications and content will be dedicated toward building a framework that is rapidly scalable, highly dynamic, available on-demand and requiring minimal management… \u00a0Cloud services, applications, security and data analytics will account for an ever-growing portion of total information technology spending by enterprises, valued at about $2 trillion at present.”<\/p>\n

Five reasons why the cloud is rapidly being adopted by businesses<\/a> as identified by Oxford Economics in a report written for IBM are as follows:<\/p>\n

  1. Better insights and visibility.<\/strong>\u00a0 The cloud provides better services at lower cost with flexible scalability.<\/li>\n
  2. Better Collaboration.<\/strong> \u00a0More easily links employees with partners and customers<\/li>\n
  3. Provides a Framework.<\/strong>\u00a0 The cloud enables businesses to build an integrated and dynamic service chain<\/li>\n
  4. Innovation.<\/strong>\u00a0 Greater efficiency and productivity of workers nurtures an environment of innovation.<\/li>\n
  5. Reduced Risk.<\/strong>\u00a0 A more responsive IT infrastructure enables better controls on costs and risks.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
