{"id":4502,"date":"2014-03-19T07:00:19","date_gmt":"2014-03-19T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4502"},"modified":"2014-02-26T08:08:40","modified_gmt":"2014-02-26T16:08:40","slug":"information-governance-many-records-management-programs-suffer-from-large-gaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/information-governance-many-records-management-programs-suffer-from-large-gaps\/","title":{"rendered":"Information Governance: Many Records Management Programs Suffer from Large Gaps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A majority of Records Management (RM) and Information Governance (IG) programs now in place lack the key elements that are needed in order to be effective. \u00a0That&#8217;s a conclusion of <a title=\"Information Governance Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ironmountain.com\/Knowledge-Center\/Reference-Library\/View-by-Document-Type\/White-Papers-Briefs\/C\/Compliance-Benchmark-Report.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">a report sponsored by AIIM, ARMA, Iron Mountain and\u00a0Cohasset Associates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Barry Murphy bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/barry-murphy\/0\/28b\/374\" target=\"_blank\">Barry Murphy<\/a>, Analyst at The eDJ Group,\u00a0<a title=\"Barry Murphy comment on Information Governance\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/barrymurphy\/2012\/04\/19\/the-state-of-information-governance\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in an article for Forbes<\/a> that &#8220;for companies that ignore IG, managing the risk that information poses is harder and harder because the volume of information stored keeps going up.&#8221; \u00a0But there is a problem because many RM\/IG programs are struggling.<\/p>\n<p>The Cohasset\u00a0<a title=\"Iron Mountain summary of the Cohasset Information Governance Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sys-con.com\/node\/2972001\" target=\"_blank\">report found<\/a> that many RM\/IG programs lacked effectivity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 17 percent do internal audits of their programs to assess how well they are meeting the demands of regulatory compliance<\/li>\n<li>Only 8 percent have developed metrics that enable them to measure changes in the effectiveness of their program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many RM\/IG programs suffer from lack of automation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Only 8 percent have an automated process to identify records that are eligible for destruction<\/li>\n<li>75 percent of organization say that lack of automation is making it difficult to enforce their retention\/destruction policies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"Sue Trombley bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/sue-trombley\/a\/63a\/10\" target=\"_blank\">Sue Trombley<\/a>, managing director at Iron Mountain, <a title=\"Importance of RM and information management\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sys-con.com\/node\/2972001\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;Information management, when done right, can push your business ahead and be a strategic lever for success. But until you achieve buy-in at all levels of the organization, master fundamentals like timely destruction, and implement a system to monitor program effectiveness, the sought-after benefits will remain elusive. You will also have to transition away from paper-based processes to manage the complexities of electronic records. Mature, well-run RIM programs have all of these things, plus the ability to adapt as information grows and changes. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div
