Data centers are changing. \u00a0Increased popularity of cloud computing and increased data volumes have led to the expansion of existing data centers and the building of new ones. \u00a0A report by UBT Tech and InformationWeek <\/a>found that 60 percent of IT decision makers worry that the capacity of their data centers are close to be overwhelmed and rate the state of their facilities as being\u00a0“fair, serious or urgent.”<\/p>\n

Data Centers rank as one of the largest consumers of energy. \u00a0An NSA data center located in Bluffdale Utah<\/a>, for example, consumes 65 megawatts of energy <\/a>monthly at a cost of $1 million per month, which is enough to power 65,000 homes with electricity. \u00a0Increasingly there has been a focus on how to make data centers more energy efficient, to make them more ‘green’.<\/p>\n

Eric Woods<\/a>, research director at Navigant Research, said that<\/a>\u00a0“there is not a single technology or design model that makes a data center green. \u00a0In fact, the green data center is connected to the broader transformation that data centers are undergoing — a transformation that encompasses technical innovation, operational improvements, new design principles, changes to the relationship between IT and business, and changes in the data center supply chain.”<\/p>\n

The green data center market is growing quickly. \u00a0In 2014, the size of the Green Data Center market will be $22.76 billion, but this is expected to increase 27 percent annually through 2019 when the market size will reach $75.89 billion, according to a report by\u00a0MarketsandMarkets<\/a>. \u00a0The APAC region is expected to see the highest pace of growth, but North America will continue to hold the largest market share.<\/p>\n
