The Internet search war pitting Google, Yahoo! or Microsoft Live and a host of other wannabe free services has raged for years.
\nThen free search spilled over onto the desktop with Google Desktop<\/a> and Microsoft’s Windows Desktop<\/a> Search.<\/p>\n

Now IBM and Microsoft are pushing the war into the enterprise. First Microsoft announced the Search Server 2008 Express Edition<\/a>, a product that’s not yet launched, but which people expect will be offered for free when it is available in the first half of 2008, and a pre-release candidate is available now.
\nIBM and Yahoo!’s IBM Omnifind Yahoo edition has been available for free download for some time and has recently been upgraded.<\/p>\n

Omnifind is based on the open source Lucene search project. The new version of Omnifind also includes standard Lucene upgrades made for the community product. With the new version is also now possible to search custom fields and to tag documents with metadata. And installation as a Windows service is now possible. The new version of Omnifind lets users cluster documents into groups that use separate indexes so that searches need not be made across the entire repository. The free version supports up to 500,000 documents. Microsoft’s Express Edition product is not expected to have any limitation to the number of documents that
\nyou can search.<\/p>\n

Omnifind’s limitation is that it requires more configuration and possibly some development to get up and running with it. Microsoft’s Express Edition doesn’t require any extra setup work. The user needs to just start using it. IBM counters that criticism though with the fact that adoption of Omnifind, especially in Europe, has been good, and IBM partners are building additional capabilities on top of their raw engine.<\/p>\n

IBM\/Yahoo, Microsoft, Autonomy and Google are all expected to be players in thie free enterprise space. But when the price is free, how can they make any money?
\nThese companies will be expecting dollars to come in when they can upsell users into purchasing complementary products and services.<\/p>\n
