Forrester Research recently revised their forecast<\/a> for the size of the public cloud market upwards by 20 percent than their 2011 estimate. \u00a0Forrester now says that public cloud computing will be a $191-billion market by 2020. \u00a0Their estimates changed after reviewing the past five years of cloud vendor data. \u00a0At the end of 2013, the public cloud was estimated to be about $58 billion and is expected to grow to $72 billion this year. \u00a0At $36 billion in 2013, Software as a Service (SaaS) accounts for the largest portion of the public cloud market.<\/p>\n

James Staten<\/a>, Forrester analyst, said that<\/a> “public cloud platforms will rival traditional infrastructure deployments by 2020. The growth in use, maturity, and financial viability of public cloud platforms are proving their longstanding value as legitimate deployment options for enterprise applications. While not a one-for-one replacement for on-premise, hosting, or colocation, cloud platforms fit well as ideal deployment options for elastic and transient workloads built in modern application architectures.”<\/p>\n

While the Forrester report noted that<\/a> the\u00a0“Cloud will not take over the technology market but will become an increasingly large part of that market, especially as a complement to on-premises core transactional systems,” \u00a0Andrew Bartels<\/a>, an analyst with Forrester, said that<\/a>\u00a0“you need to update your forecast to keep up with reality. \u00a0Now we have a new set of numbers to work with. One of the key trends behind this is that the cloud is starting to shift from a complement to a replacement for existing technology.”<\/p>\n
