In 2007 the Business Intelligence (BI) market saw a massive consolidation of vendors<\/a>. \u00a0Vendors like Cognos, Business Objects and Hyperion were snapped up by large megavendors IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP. These megavendors were then expected to dominate the BI marketplace. \u00a0At the time, Forrester predicted that<\/a> “that the BI and business performance solutions markets will continue to consolidate around these four large vendors but will not be commoditized anytime soon.”<\/p>\n

Seven years later, things don’t seem to have changed much. \u00a0GigaOm is predicting that BI vendor consolidation are heating up again. \u00a0This new wave of consolidation is being driven by a new generation of analytics and big data, two elements where long-time BI vendors have gaps in their portfolios. \u00a0IDC estimates that at the business analytics market will reach $50.7 billion in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Derrick Harris<\/a> at GigaOm wrote that<\/a> “TIBCO has acquired Jaspersoft<\/a> in a move that could signal further consolidation in the business intelligence space. Vendors such as Tableau and Microsoft dominate in terms of mindshare and capabilities, leaving other big players playing catch up by opening their wallets… \u00a0It\u2019s not an earth-shaking deal, but it could be a sign of things to come in an analytics software market full of companies and products that have a hard time standing out from the crowd.”<\/p>\n

Ventana Research<\/a> warned in 2007 that “while billions of dollars are being spent… organizations should prepare themselves for the dark side of consolidation which will impact your vendor relationship, technology direction and customer support.”<\/p>\n
