The Internet of Things(IoT) — it’s the envisioned world where everything from electric toothbrushes to hydro-electric power plants will be plugged into the internet, interconnected, monitorable and controllable, hopefully only by those with the appropriate security privileges. \u00a0Increasingly the future of IoT is already being realized today, and it is being aided and supported by technologies like big data, cloud computing and mobile. \u00a0As an IT director said<\/a>, IoT is making a “billion the new million.”<\/p>\n

The hype around IoT has been strong as major tech vendors try to grab hold and redefine the technology in a way that best promotes their strengths. \u00a0Cisco<\/a> and Intel<\/a> are recasting the ‘Internet of Things’ as the ‘Internet of Everything’ (IOE). \u00a0GE<\/a> has taken more of a manufacturing and enterprise view and is calling it the ‘Industrial Internet’. \u00a0Now, Microsoft, longtime vendor of personal computer software, has put their own spin on the IoT concept, trying to make the concept more personal — they’re calling it the Internet of Your<\/em> Things<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Microsoft’s general manager of marketing, Barbara Edson<\/a>, said that<\/a> the concept of 212 billion interconnected devices by 2020 is something that most people just can’t get their heads around. \u00a0She say’s it’s confusing both to businesses and consumers. \u00a0“So many people are talking about IoT, but it\u2019s really just a network. \u00a0A simple concept that\u2019s blown up. \u00a0IoT is really a huge buzz word. \u00a0It\u2019s not a revolution, it\u2019s an evolution. \u00a0We really don\u2019t think it\u2019s a rip and replace. \u00a0It\u2019s about using the infrastructure you already have, connecting the devices that are already in place.”<\/p>\n
