{"id":4663,"date":"2014-06-11T07:00:17","date_gmt":"2014-06-11T15:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4663"},"modified":"2014-05-18T21:09:41","modified_gmt":"2014-05-19T05:09:41","slug":"high-performance-computing-applying-supercomputing-to-the-worlds-most-difficult-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/high-performance-computing-applying-supercomputing-to-the-worlds-most-difficult-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"High Performance Computing: Applying Supercomputing to the World&#8217;s Most Difficult Problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Wikipedia on High Performance Computing\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/High-performance_computing\" target=\"_blank\">High Performance Computing <\/a>(HPC) is the term applied to computers that are the fastest and most-cutting edge in their abilities to parse and solve very complex problems. \u00a0As computing machines become ever more sophisticated and capable, the bar continually rises on what is considered a supercomputer.<\/p>\n<p>HPC-level machines are frequently applied to difficult scientific problems like weather prediction and simulation, genomic analysis, but also for things like analyzing complex multi-parameter financial models, and for modeling and developing new innovative products. \u00a0Supercomputers can often give businesses an edge over their competitors when making important business decisions.<\/p>\n<p>A report by <a title=\"HPC market estimates by MarketandMarkets\" href=\"http:\/\/insurancenewsnet.com\/oarticle\/2014\/05\/16\/hpc-market-expected-to-reach-$3343-billion-by-2018--report-by-marketsandmarket-a-505370.html#.U3k6ofldV8E\" target=\"_blank\">Markets and Markets estimated<\/a> the HPC market to be $24.32 billion i n2013 and will grow to $33.43 billion by 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Earl Joseph bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/earl-joseph\/3\/b99\/7b8\" target=\"_blank\">Earl Joseph<\/a>, program vice president for technical computing at IDC, <a title=\"HPC by IDC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS24762414\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;HPC servers have been closely linked\u2014not only to scientific advances, but also to industrial innovation and economic competitiveness. \u00a0For this reason, nations and regions across the world, as well as businesses and universities of all sizes, are increasing their investments in high performance computing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>National Defense agencies are also \u00a0increasingly applying HPC to military and national security problems. \u00a0The <a title=\"Global Defense HPC market\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marketresearchmedia.com\/?p=361\" target=\"_blank\">global defense HPC market <\/a>is expected to reach $13.6 billion in 2020.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Eric D. Isaacs bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.anl.gov\/contributors\/eric-d-isaacs\" target=\"_blank\">Eric D. Isaacs<\/a>, Director of Argonne National Laboratory, <a title=\"Eric Isaacs on HPC and national defense\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/eric-d-isaacs\/why-america-must-win-the_b_785652.html\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;the United States cannot afford to take a back seat in computer technology to the Chinese, or to anyone else. The nation that leads the world in high-performance computing will have an enormous competitive advantage in every sector, including national defense\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
