Shadow IT<\/a> is the introduction and use of non-approved IT systems inside organizations. \u00a0It is a grass-roots effort by employees to use tools and applications that they think can help them get their jobs done more quickly or more efficiently than the sanctioned enterprise IT applications used within their organization. \u00a0The increasing availability of low-cost SaaS and cloud-based applications and services has only accelerated the problem of Shadow IT. \u00a0Forrester Research\u00a0noted that<\/a>\u00a0many people in organizations use Shadow IT tools\u00a0” because it is quick and easy and meets their needs at a point in time.”<\/p>\n

Sian John,<\/a>\u00a0security strategist at Symantec,\u00a0said\u00a0<\/a>that “Shadow IT carries risk… \u00a0Workers are driving innovation in the name of productivity and quality of life, and are bypassing the IT departments in order to find the technology that allows them to do this.”<\/p>\n

A study by McAfee<\/a> found that 80 percent of employees use a non-approved SaaS application for their job. \u00a035 percent of all SaaS applications in organizations have been purchased and used without oversight from IT.<\/p>\n

A report <\/a>by Netscope<\/a> found that IT departments underestimate by nearly a factor of 10 the actual number of cloud apps that are used by their organization. \u00a0As technology entrepreneur Billy Marshall<\/a> said<\/a>, “the CIO is the last to know.”<\/p>\n

Nigel Beighton<\/a>,\u00a0VP of technology and products at\u00a0Rackspace, said that “the world of the data center is radically changing. \u00a0The number one question I\u2019m asked at any event, by people who run substantial IT departments, is about how they can provide a competitive service and not be by passed by shadow IT… \u00a0But most companies want to keep IT internally controlled, for governance reasons… “<\/p>\n
