In December Adobe released as Open Source the specification and code for compact and efficient data transmissions — a project that they’re calling BlazeDS. BlazeDS uses a high-performant, low-bandwidth technology called AMF, a kind of next-generation RPC. The technology was acquired by Adobe with their purchase of MacroMedia in 2005. Adobe has adopted the technology for use with Flex applications which are deployed as Flash.<\/p>\n

Adobe’s Ted Patrick summarized <\/a>some of the benefits of AMF:<\/p>\n

1. File Size<\/span> – AMF objects are very small and are compressed<\/p>\n

2. Fast Serialization\/Deserialization<\/span> – AMF is transformed using native C code in the Flash Player so it is blazing fast. The AMF format was designed to serialize and deserialize quickly under low memory and slower CPU conditions.

\n3. Native Types and Custom classes supported <\/span> – You can serialize any object in Flash Player with the only exception being displayObjects. You can also map serialized objects back to custom class instances provided the custom class is in the Flash Player when things are deserialized.<\/p>\n

With an Open Source license, the technology is likely to develop more quickly and help to enable better back-end connectivity for Flex-based internet applications. The BlazeDS project is also designed to work with ESBs (enterprise service buses) and can allow Flash-based applications to communicate with databases and other applications.<\/p>\n

The announcement of open sourcing this technology is an important move in Adobe’s strategy to win mind-share over to Adobe Web application development technologies.<\/p>\n
