In yesterday’s blog we reported on the hypergrowth that the cloud computing industry is experiencing. \u00a0IDC estimates that in 2014 more than $100 billion<\/a> will be spent on the cloud.<\/p>\n

While the speed of transition to the cloud has been blistering, reports also show that businesses are still not comfortable with security of data in the cloud<\/a>. \u00a0And that lurking feeling of insecurity will likely mean that businesses still will hold back on pushing all their data and apps into the cloud. \u00a0Some data is just too confidential or important to risk storing in the cloud.<\/p>\n

Alfresco, an Enterprise Content Management software vendor, see business more comfortable with what they call a 20-60-20 hybrid cloud scenario. \u00a0There’s about 20 percent of data that businesses are fully comfortable in moving to the cloud. \u00a0And at the other end of the spectrum there’s another 20 percent of their data that no way would they ever risk putting into the cloud or for regulatory reasons are currently restricted from being placed in the cloud. \u00a0And then there is another 60 percent of their data that those businesses want have some control over but still also want to share with others, like partners, suppliers and customers, outside their business. \u00a0To enable this kind of scenario, Alfresco built software that allows a subset of their on-premise data to be synchronized with data stored in the cloud.<\/p>\n

Similarly, Lance Crosby<\/a>, CEO of SoftLayer, an IBM company, said that<\/a> “unlike our competitors, we don\u2019t think everything is going to the cloud. We think 50-80% will be going to the cloud.”<\/p>\n

Esmeralda Swartz<\/a>, CMO of MetraTech, said that <\/a>“organizations take time to evolve. That’s why we’re bound for a hybrid future, where public and private clouds blend to create a shared infrastructure that spans application, organization and data center boundaries. Companies need the freedom to evolve and optimize applications and data for SLAs tuned for price, policy and performance. A future that blends the best of public and private clouds, provides the right balance of an elastic cloud infrastructure to meet the range of requirements from applications and users.”<\/p>\n
