As we move into an era of the Internet of Things (IoT), devices will get continually smarter and will collect ever more diagnostic and environmental data. \u00a0The data generated by IoT devices will be further incentive for businesses to invest in Big Data and the Cloud.<\/p>\n

A report from InfoBlox<\/a> found that many organizations are adding devices to their network, like badge readers and video surveillance systems. \u00a0These devices are storing data and in many cases communicating across the network to other devices. \u00a0Despite adding this new load to their network, only 35 percent of these businesses have done anything to increase the bandwidth of their networks.<\/p>\n

Cricket Liu<\/a>, the company\u2019s chief infrastructure officer, said that “In many cases they\u2019re just deploying these things on their existing corporate network. \u00a0Sometimes they\u2019re consigning them to guest wireless because they don\u2019t have a dedicated portion of their network for ‘things’… \u00a0Network administrators have struggled in recent years to stay on top of the \u2018bring your own device\u2019 trend, and the IoT will create an increase in end-points that is an order of magnitude greater. \u00a0At the same time, many network teams will have to respond to the IoT without significant increases in budgets or head count. Network automation will become crucial as IT departments confront this massive growth in network complexity.”<\/p>\n

Mike Kavis<\/a>, VP\/Principal Architect for Cloud Technology Partners, wrote that<\/a> “some companies are still hanging on to the belief that they can manage their own data centers better than the various cloud providers out there. This state of denial should all but go away when the influx of petabyte scale data becomes a reality for enterprises. Enterprises are going to have to ask themselves, \u201cDo we want to be in the infrastructure business?\u201d because that is what it will take to provide the appropriate amount of bandwidth, disk storage, and compute power to keep up with the demand for data ingestion, storage, and real-time analytics that will serve the business needs. If there ever was a use case for the cloud, the IoT and Big Data is it.”<\/p>\n
