Yikes! \u00a0Despite the stunning growth numbers behind the web, a new report<\/a> shows a dark side: Cloud implementation failures.<\/p>\n

63 percent of Amazon AWS projects are considered failed, compared to 57 percent of projects on Rackspace and 44 percent of Microsoft Azure projects. \u00a0That’s according to a report done by VMWare. \u00a0VMWare concluded in their study that \u00a0failures were least likely to occur on non-VMWare based platforms, which you might expect. \u00a0Although VMWare-based failures were also high at 33 percent.<\/p>\n

The report said that “the promise of the cloud remains tantalizingly out of reach, and in its place are technical headaches, pricing challenges and unexpectedly high operational costs… \u00a0Respondents reported staggering failure rates across ‘tech giant’ IaaS implementations and identified the support and functionality needed to overcome top challenges.”<\/p>\n

There’s the question of whether these numbers are to be believed and also to understand in more detail just what constitutes a failure, but to put the high failure rates in perspective, in 2008 before the boom of cloud computing, a study found that, on average, 68 percent of IT projects are considered failures<\/a>. \u00a0Maybe things just never change.<\/p>\n
