A majority of business leaders think that their IT departments are more of a burden than a help, according to the survey results taken by Forrester <\/a>of 3500 executives. \u00a0CIOs are considered to be gatekeepers; they’re not seen as innovators or helping with driving new business for the company.<\/p>\n

The criticism of IT was nearly unanimous<\/a>. \u00a0Among customer service, product development and sales, 79, 78 and 74 percent said respectively, that IT is not helping them to succeed. \u00a0Among R&D and marketing managers, 69 and 51 percent say that IT doesn’t factor into the technology projects that they’re working on.<\/p>\n

Kyle McNabb<\/a>, VP of Content Strategy at\u00a0Forrester, told the WSJ<\/a> that “we\u2019ve built up this history for how CIOs do their job over the past 20 years, where their agenda was largely set by the CFO.”<\/p>\n

Part of the problem is that business units are increasingly working with outside technology vendors and compare the value brought by these vendors to their own internal IT group. \u00a0The Forrester report’s advice<\/a> to IT is that\u00a0“business leaders have grown accustomed to working with digital agencies and consultancies to build new mobile applications, websites, and loyalty programmes. To win their trust, you need to mirror many of the skills and behaviours of these firms.”<\/p>\n
