{"id":4813,"date":"2014-09-22T07:00:13","date_gmt":"2014-09-22T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4813"},"modified":"2014-08-28T07:54:57","modified_gmt":"2014-08-28T15:54:57","slug":"technology-breakthrough-in-neural-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/technology-breakthrough-in-neural-computing\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology: Breakthrough in Neural Computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After ten years of research at IBM with $53 million in funding from DARPA and 200 people assigned to the project, IBM has <a title=\"Scicne Mag on IBM's new brain chip\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/345\/6197\/668\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled a new superchip <\/a>which is an attempt to emulate the way that a human brain operates. \u00a0The new chip contains a million components dubbed as &#8216;neurons&#8217; or &#8216;brain cells&#8217; connected together by 4096 neurosynaptic cores, all laid out on a 64 by 64 grid. \u00a0They&#8217;re calling it\u00a0a &#8220;<a title=\"Neurosynaptic \" href=\"http:\/\/www.jasonsummers.org\/neurosynaptic-chips\/\" target=\"_blank\">neurosynaptic<\/a>&#8221; chip.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to standard chips being produced by Intel for today&#8217;s laptop and desktop computers which typically have 1.4 billion transistors and consume 35 to 140 watts of power, the new IBM brain chip comes with 5.4 billion transistors and draws only 70 milliwatts of power, the equivalent of a hearing-aid battery.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Dharmendra Modha bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/in\/dharmendramodha\" target=\"_blank\">Dharmendra Modha<\/a>, principal investigator for the project, said that &#8220;you can tile these chips seamlessly, and it becomes twice the chip. \u00a0We have already tiled 16 of them in a 4 x 4 array, to create a 16 million neuron, 4 billion synapse core.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new computer is designed to mimic humans. \u00a0<a title=\"Richard Doherty bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/richard-doherty\/1\/289\/550\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Doherty<\/a>, the research director at the Envisioneering Group, <a title=\"Richard Doherty bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/ibms-truenorth-processor-mimics-the-human-brain\/\" target=\"_blank\">commented that <\/a>&#8220;we wouldn&#8217;t be able to navigate through our world without senses. \u00a0These devices could one day see the world around us through vision, smell&#8230;sight, and sound, just the way we get around the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But some have criticized the IBM announcement as inflated. \u00a0<a title=\"Nayaran Srinivasa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SyNAPSE\" target=\"_blank\">Nayaran Srinivasa<\/a>, a researcher at HRL Laboratories , said that &#8220;it\u2019s definitely an achievement to make a chip of that scale\u2026but I think the claims are a bit stretched because there is no learning happening on the chip&#8230; It\u2019s not brain-like in a lot of ways. All the learning happens off-line, on traditional computers.. The von Neumann component is doing all the \u2018brain\u2019 work, so in that sense it\u2019s not breaking any paradigm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some worry too that as we advance technology we need to also do it in a controlled way. \u00a0<a title=\"Elon Musk bio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elon_Musk\" target=\"_blank\">Elon Musk<\/a>, founder of Tesla and SpaceX, recently\u00a0<a title=\"Elon Musk on dangers of AI\" href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/08\/03\/elon-musk-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\">commented on Twitter<\/a> that\u00a0&#8220;we need to be super careful with A.I. \u00a0It is potentially more dangerous than nukes.&#8221; \u00a0<a title=\"Steven Hawking bio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hawking\" target=\"_blank\">Steven Hawking<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Steven Hawkings on AI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/stephen-hawking-artificial-intelligence-could-be-a-real-danger\/\" target=\"_blank\">made similar comments<\/a> that &#8220;Artificial intelligence could be a real danger in the not too distant future&#8230; A robot might\u00a0design improvements to itself and outsmart us all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
