{"id":4823,"date":"2014-09-08T07:00:50","date_gmt":"2014-09-08T15:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4823"},"modified":"2014-08-09T16:18:25","modified_gmt":"2014-08-10T00:18:25","slug":"technology-ibm-invests-big-in-nanometer-technology-for-chips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/technology-ibm-invests-big-in-nanometer-technology-for-chips\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology: IBM Invests Big in Nanometer Technology for Chips"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IBM <a title=\"IBM chip technology investments\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9249664\/IBM_eyes_new_chips_for_a_new_digital_age\" target=\"_blank\">has announced plans<\/a> for building a new generation of chips that will push silicon technology to its limits. \u00a0They&#8217;ve committed to spending $3 billion over the next five years to create a chip based on &#8216;7 nanometer technology&#8217;. \u00a0That represents 10 percent of IBM&#8217;s total research budget. \u00a0These next generation of chips are targeting applications for cloud computing, big data, mobility and security. \u00a0The money will be dedicated towards research that will help overcome current technical challenges with making chip technology even denser.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, this new generation of chip may not be based on silicon. \u00a0IBM is considering material alternatives like carbon nanotubes and also may deviate from standard computing techniques, applying things like machine learning, quantum computing, neuromorphic and cognitive computing.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Tom Rosamilia bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/biography\/28747.wss\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Rosamilia<\/a>, SVP of IBM Systems and Technology Group, <a title=\"Tom Rosamilia bio\" href=\"http:\/\/uncovercalifornia.com\/content\/2482-ibm-plans-spend-3-billion-overhaul-computer-chip-technology\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;in the next ten years computing hardware systems will be fundamentally different as our scientists and engineers push the limits of semiconductor innovations to explore a post-silicon future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Richard Doherty bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/bizjournals\/prnewswire\/search?q=%22Richard+Doherty%22\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Doherty<\/a>, technology research director at the Envisioneering Group, <a title=\"Richard Doherty on IBM nanoscale technology chips\" href=\"https:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/press\/uk\/en\/pressrelease\/44363.wss\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;scaling to 7nm and below is a terrific challenge, calling for deep physics competencies in processing nano materials affinities and characteristics. IBM is one of a very few companies who has repeatedly demonstrated this level of science and engineering expertise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"John Kelly bio\" href=\"https:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/biography\/10060.wss\" target=\"_blank\">John Kelly<\/a>, senior vice president, IBM Research, <a title=\"IBM Cloud Technology\" href=\"http:\/\/www-03.ibm.com\/press\/us\/en\/pressrelease\/44357.wss\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;the question is not if we will introduce 7 nanometer technology into manufacturing, but rather how, when, and at what cost. \u00a0IBM engineers and scientists, along with our partners, are well suited for this challenge and are already working on the materials science and device engineering required to meet the demands of the emerging system requirements for cloud, big data, and cognitive systems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div
