What do the technologies:\u00a0the Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous vehicles, consumer 3D printing, Big Data and wearable computing have in common? \u00a0They’re all hot technologies that Gartner<\/a> says are now in an over-hyped stage of their technology cycle. \u00a0This is the 20th year that Gartner has released their list of most hyped technology categories<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At the peak, the expectations and hype around a technology are at their highest. \u00a0What comes next is that people begin to question whether the promises of the technology can hold true, and typically there is a backlash effect during which people have feelings of ‘disillusionment’ about the technology. \u00a0In 2014, the technologies that have sunk to their low points from once lofty highs include gamification, augmented reality and Near Field Communication (NFC).<\/p>\n

Jackie Fenn<\/a>, vice president, said that “enterprises should use this Hype Cycle to identify which technologies are emerging and use the concept of digital business transformation to identify which business trends may result.” \u00a0Hung LeHong<\/a>, vice president and Gartner, said that “the central theme for this year’s Emerging Technologies Hype Cycle is Digital Business. As enterprises embark on the journey to becoming digital businesses, they will leverage technologies that today are considered to be ’emerging.’ \u00a0Understanding where your enterprise is on this journey and where you need to go will not only determine the amount of change expected for your enterprise, but also map out which combination of technologies support your progression.”<\/p>\n
