Emails and electronic documents now dominate today’s business communication. As a result, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) includes <\/a> requirements for how to handle electronically stored information during litigation and regulatory investigations. The process of forensic inspection of electronic data is often known as e-Discovery.<\/p>\n

Classic eDiscovery can be a slow process. Investigation experts average being able to process about 30 to 60 documents per hour. It’s no wonder that eDiscovery costs can skyrocket when many individuals and the documents that they created are involved in the investigation.<\/p>\n

For example, consider <\/a>an investigation that centers on a group of 25 people over a period of 60 days. The number of emails involved in the investigation could reach 70,000. Higher profile investigations with a broader scope could easily require that many more emails and documents be examined.<\/p>\n

eDiscovery often is a very linear process. As documents are examined, the direction and scope of the investigation is subject to great change. Piecing together the complete picture is part of the challenge.<\/p>\n

Technology applied to the eDiscovery process can provide order of magnitudes improvement over how the investigation can be performed. Key to the improvement is a process known as Categorization, the automatic classification and grouping of sets of documents and emails. Bringing together similar documents can let the investigators locate more quickly certain details and reveal the context between many documents that otherwise may have taken significant time to uncover.<\/p>\n

eDiscovery software can also identify and automatically eliminate duplicate emails or emails of no relevancy to the investigation, and by doing so, save significant amounts of time.<\/p>\n

Using eDiscovery and enterprise search software, investigators can research upwards of 300-500 documents per hour, and sometimes as many as 1000 per hour. Applying eDiscovery software tools lets companies significantly reduce costs and effort needed for the discovery process while minimizing company exposure.<\/p>\n
