Increasingly, new applications and systems, especially cloud-based ones, are rolling out low-code or no-code tools that let customers quickly setup and visually configure both system settings and the overall user experience. \u00a0Examples of low-code application tools include configuring data models and laying out forms and workflows.<\/p>\n

Clay Richardson<\/a> and John Rymer<\/a>, principal analysts \u00a0at Forrester<\/a>,\u00a0wrote in a report on low-code development<\/a>, that “low-code platforms are rising as an alternative for developing customer-facing apps. \u00a0Initially targeted at speeding all projects, these platforms are finding traction in the age of the customer’s heightened priority for customer experience software. \u00a0Hand-coding is too slow to develop and deliver many of the applications that companies use to win, serve and retain customers.”<\/p>\n

Richardson told SDTimes<\/a> that “Forrester began highlighting the need for workflow and process-change platforms to become more lightweight and nimble. \u00a0We decided to bring these two streams of research together in 2013 to focus on speeding up development for customer-facing applications, which is where the term \u2018low-code\u2019 really stuck. Through dozens of interviews with companies, we found that the low-code imperative was strongest for teams trying to quickly build apps in response to customer demands and customer needs.”<\/p>\n
