{"id":4884,"date":"2014-11-12T07:00:36","date_gmt":"2014-11-12T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4884"},"modified":"2014-10-11T17:27:43","modified_gmt":"2014-10-12T01:27:43","slug":"soft-robotics-robots-that-can-weather-the-elements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/soft-robotics-robots-that-can-weather-the-elements\/","title":{"rendered":"Soft Robotics: Robots that can Weather the Elements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robots are going soft. \u00a0Soft Robots, or &#8216;<a title=\"Soft Robot definition\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bio-inspired_robotics\" target=\"_blank\">bio-inspired robots<\/a>&#8216;, aren&#8217;t made out of the stiff components of traditional robots. \u00a0They&#8217;re able to bend and contort themselves so as to move into spaces much more easily, and because there are no hard and sharp edges, they&#8217;re less likely to cause injuries to people or objects that they may come into contact with.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Vytas Sunspiral bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/in\/sunspiral\" target=\"_blank\">Vytas SunSpiral<\/a>, researcher at NASA Ames Research Center,\u00a0<a title=\"Soft Robot possibilities\" href=\"http:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/technology\/engineering\/robots\/indestructible-starfish-robots-could-save-your-life-one-day-17190305\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;Rigid systems are fragile, and most of the robots built to date can only work in very limited and controlled conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Gerald van Hoy bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/AnalystBiography?authorId=13905\" target=\"_blank\">Gerald Van Hoy<\/a>, an analyst at market research firm Gartner, <a title=\"Gartner on Soft Robotics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessweek.com\/articles\/2014-08-21\/soft-robotics-research-snuggle-against-the-machine\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;soft robotics has the potential to influence all kinds of robotic and machine design. \u00a0It\u2019s a key development in the evolution of robotics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Michael Tolley bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/michael-tolley\/28\/8bb\/2b1\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Tolley<\/a>, a research associate in materials science and mechanical engineering at the Wyss Institute, <a title=\"Michael Tolley\" href=\"http:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2014\/09\/cutting-the-cord-on-soft-robots\/\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;One of the things that limit our imagination is that factory robots are very large and scary and dangerous to be around. \u00a0As a lay person, you can\u2019t just walk into a factory where industrial robots are working. But a soft system is inherently less dangerous, so you can start to interact with it more, and I think that opens up many more opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Research on soft robots combines ideas from\u00a0organic chemistry, soft materials science and traditional robotics. <a title=\"Harvard research on soft robotics\" href=\"http:\/\/online.liebertpub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1089\/soro.2014.0008\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Recently researchers at Harvard<\/a> have created a resilient and untethered robot that can weather the elements.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\"
