{"id":4944,"date":"2014-11-11T07:00:47","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T15:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=4944"},"modified":"2014-10-11T13:50:00","modified_gmt":"2014-10-11T21:50:00","slug":"coreos-linux-vendors-in-the-crosshairs-of-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/coreos-linux-vendors-in-the-crosshairs-of-disruption\/","title":{"rendered":"CoreOS: Linux Vendors in the Crosshairs of Disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Linux distribution vendors like\u00a0Red Hat, Canonical, and Suse are under threat of disruption from a repackaged and streamlined minimalist product from <a title=\"CoreOS on wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CoreOS\" target=\"_blank\">CoreOS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cloud providers are intrigued with the technology, and CoreOS is now offered\u00a0on <a title=\"AWS on CoreOS\" href=\"https:\/\/coreos.com\/docs\/running-coreos\/cloud-providers\/ec2\/\" target=\"_blank\">AWS<\/a>, <a title=\"Google CoreOS\" href=\"https:\/\/coreos.com\/docs\/running-coreos\/cloud-providers\/google-compute-engine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Compute Engine<\/a>, <a title=\"Rackspace and CoreOS\" href=\"https:\/\/coreos.com\/docs\/running-coreos\/cloud-providers\/rackspace\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rackspace<\/a>, <a title=\"OpenStack and CoreOS\" href=\"https:\/\/coreos.com\/docs\/running-coreos\/platforms\/openstack\/\" target=\"_blank\">OpenStack <\/a>and <a title=\"VMWare and Coreos\" href=\"https:\/\/coreos.com\/docs\/running-coreos\/platforms\/vmware\/\" target=\"_blank\">VMware<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional Linux distributions have become increasingly bloated as vendors have added ever more features. \u00a0<a title=\"Matt Assay bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/in\/mjasay\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Assay<\/a>\u00a0in an Infoworld article quotes a Linux industry observer as<a title=\"Matt Assay on CoreOS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/2692889\/open-source-software\/coreos-an-existential-threat-to-linux-vendors.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0saying that<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;CoreOS is the first cloud-native OS to emerge. It is lightweight, disposable, and tries to embed devops practices in its architecture. RHEL has always been about adding value by adding more. CoreOS creates value by giving you less.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CoreOS is designed to be cluster ready and easily maintainable. \u00a0The ideas behind the CoreOS Linux distribution, which is a fork of Google&#8217;s <a title=\"Chrome OS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chromium.org\/chromium-os\" target=\"_blank\">Chrome OS<\/a>, include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimalist, consuming less than 40 percent RAM than the average Linux distribution<\/li>\n<li>Quick updates to new versions, rather than package by package updates<\/li>\n<li>Docker Containers used by most applications<\/li>\n<li>Designed for clustering<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The easy upgradability is one of the shining features of CoreOS. \u00a0Patches and upgrades to OSes can be disruptive and difficult. \u00a0Recent OS vulnerabilities like <a title=\"Shellshock vulnerability\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/technology\/technology\/2014\/09\/shellshock_what_you_need_to_know_about_the_bash_vulnerability.html\" target=\"_blank\">Shellshock <\/a>and <a title=\"Xen hypervisor vulnerability\" href=\"http:\/\/www.networkworld.com\/article\/2687998\/cloud-computing\/why-amazon-is-rebooting-10-of-its-cloud-servers.html\" target=\"_blank\">Xen hypervisor<\/a> were <a title=\"Shellshock and Xen vulnerabilities\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/coreos-eliminates-downtime-from-server-os-patching\/\" target=\"_blank\">particularly difficult to guard against <\/a>because they struck at components of the OS. \u00a0CoreOS&#8217;s design allows the OS to be non-disruptively patched, minimizing headaches related to installing patches.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago,\u00a0<a title=\"Lew Moorman bio\" href=\"www.linkedin.com\/pub\/lew-moorman\/1\/783\/a4a\" target=\"_blank\">Lew Moorman<\/a>, former Rackspace president, <a title=\"Moorman on CoreOS\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2013\/08\/coreos-the-new-linux\/\" target=\"_blank\">predicted <\/a>that CoreOS &#8220;is the way a lot of modern applications are going to get built \u2014 though it\u2019s very early days. \u00a0This is not super-mainstream today\u2026 but having a lightweight system like this where you can easily manage a huge number of machines will be very, very valuable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
