Data centers as we know them are rapidly changing and, in many cases, and will actually start to disappear. \u00a0IDC is predicting<\/a> that the total number of data centers will peak in 2017 at 8.6 million. \u00a0After that, even though the total floor space occupied by all data centers will continue to grow, the total number of individual data centers and internal server closets will begin to shrink.<\/p>\n

Richard Villars<\/a>, VP of data center and cloud research at IDC, said that\u00a0“over the next five years, a majority of organizations will stop managing their own infrastructure. \u00a0They will make greater use of on-premise and hosted managed services for their existing IT assets, and turn to dedicated and shared cloud offerings in service provider data centers for new services. \u00a0This will result in the consolidation and retirement of some existing internal data centers, particularly at the low end. At the same time, service providers will continue their race to build, remodel, and acquire data centers to meet the growing demand for capacity.”<\/p>\n

Traditional data centers are being replaced by a new and significantly bigger breed of data center being dubbed ‘mega data centers’. \u00a0These are the kind of massive facilities being built by businesses like Google, Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft. \u00a0By 2018, IDC predicts that the mega data center will account for nearly three quarters of all new data center construction projects.<\/p>\n

The dynamics of these bigger data centers will have an impact on hardware vendors. \u00a0Hardware vendors are likely to be squeezed as increasingly these bigger data centers choose non-branded hardware the actual total number of customers that are buying hardware shrink.<\/p>\n
