{"id":5055,"date":"2014-12-24T07:00:57","date_gmt":"2014-12-24T15:00:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/?p=5055"},"modified":"2014-11-16T17:25:47","modified_gmt":"2014-11-17T01:25:47","slug":"super-computing-reaching-towards-exascale-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/formtek.com\/blog\/super-computing-reaching-towards-exascale-computing\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Computing: Reaching Towards Exascale Computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Department of Energy (DOE) <a title=\"DOE plans for supercomputers\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/newsfeeds\/articles\/marketwire\/1158981.htm\" target=\"_blank\">announced that it plans<\/a> to spend $425 million to build two new supercomputers. \u00a0The computers will use a technology called GPU acceleration which will enable them to be at least three times more powerful than today&#8217;s computers. \u00a0It will be another step forward towards the creation of an <a title=\"Exascale computer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Exascale_computing\" target=\"_blank\">exascale computer<\/a>, or a computer that is one thousand times faster than the first petascale computer introduced in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new computers will use\u00a0next-generation IBM POWER servers with NVIDIA Tesla GPU accelerators and NVIDIA NVLink high-speed GPU interconnect technology. \u00a0The project is expected to be completed and the new computers delivered by 2017. \u00a0Both computers are being designed to operate in the range of 150 to 300 petaflops. \u00a0The fastest computers today are China&#8217;s 55-petaflop computer known as Tianhe-2 and a 27-petaflop computer called Titan used in the US at Oak Ridge.<\/p>\n<p>The new computers will use a new technique developed by IBM that will increase processing speed by being more data centered, which will result in reduced energy consumption and less data in motion.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Jen-Hsun Huang bio\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jen-Hsun_Huang\" target=\"_blank\">Jen-Hsun Huang<\/a>, CEO and co-founder of NVIDIA, <a title=\"Quote from Nvidia on Supercomputing\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/news\/newsfeeds\/articles\/marketwire\/1158981.htm\" target=\"_blank\">said that\u00a0<\/a>&#8220;today&#8217;s science is tomorrow&#8217;s technology. \u00a0Scientists are tackling massive challenges from quantum to global to galactic scales. Their work relies on increasingly more powerful supercomputers. Through the invention of GPU acceleration, we have paved the path to exascale supercomputing &#8212; giving scientists a tool for unimaginable discoveries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div
