LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and Php\/Perl) has long been considered a basic building block of the Internet. Last week Sun bought a piece of the LAMP with their agreement to purchase MySQL for $1 billion. MySQL CEO Marten Mickos along with 400 MySQL employees will be merged into Sun operations once the deal is completed.<\/p>\n

Why did Sun do it? Ian Murdock, chief OS platform strategist, explained <\/a>by saying in an interview with IT Business Edge that “with MySQL’s nearly 50 percent share of the open source market across all major operating systems, hardware vendors, geographies, industries and application types, the acquisition opens doors and creates business opportunities for Sun in such key growth markets as Web 2.0 and software-as-a-service (SaaS).<\/span>”<\/p>\n

Analysts picked up on the reference to data services. SearchSOA quotes Forrester Research as predicting <\/a>that “not only could Sun branch into data services now that it has MySQL, but, in fact, Sun is highly likely to do so now.”<\/p>\n

Sun is piecing together a middleware stack that seeks to rival Red Hat\/JBoss. The Sun stack includes OpenSolaris, GlassFish, MySQL, Java, Netbeans and the Sun Java Composite Application Software Suite (acquired from SeeBeyond two years ago). Forrester speculates that Sun may try to further acquire missing components for an SOA\/data services strategy that might include enterprise information integration (EII), business intelligence (BI), data warehousing (DW) and extract transform load (ETL) tooling. Possible acquisition candidates include Composite Software Inc.<\/a>, Ipedo Inc.<\/a>, Talend<\/a>, JasperSoft, and Pentaho Corp.<\/a><\/p>\n
