The Business Intelligence (BI) market is expected to remain in double-digit growth through 2011, and after that fall into single digit growth. That’s the conclusion <\/a>of a Gartner report on the state of the BI market.<\/p>\n

While BI remains an important tool that companies need to help them make business decisions, Gartner sees the market for BI software maturing. They are predicting accelerated consolidation that will lead to a market dominated by mega-vendors, followed by the gradual fall of prices.<\/p>\n

Growth of BI software in 2007 clocked in at 12.5%. By 2011, Gartner is expecting to see that growth rate to shrink to just 8.6%. Part of the ‘problem’ is that BI has become much more pervasive and is often bundled with other sets of software at no additional cost.<\/p>\n

Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Office 2007 and PerformancePoint Server, for example, all include basic BI functionality. SAP and Oracle have also recently purchased BI companies and are expected to bundle some of the capabilities in their stacks.<\/p>\n

While mega-vendors drive acceptance and usage of BI, Gartner expects to see many smaller companies popping up that will provide greater innovation. Software as a Service is one area that is under development, as well as companies applying BI in novel ways to Enterprise Search and Executive dashboards.<\/p>\n

In effect, it seems that one chapter of BI as a technology is maturing and winding down, only to be superseded by a new round of innovation and growth.<\/p>\n
