Gartner has come out with a list of five-year top-10 predictions.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. 80% of commerical software will have some component of Open Source<\/li>\n
  2. SaaS will account for one third of business application dollars in 2012<\/li>\n
  3. Infrastructure as a Service will be a common by 2011<\/li>\n
  4. Apple will double its market share for computers by 2011<\/li>\n
  5. PDA\/ultra-portables and SaaS access anywhere will have half the market share of traveling workers by 2012<\/li>\n
  6. One third of companies will be havde a ‘green’ purchase criteria in 2009<\/li>\n
  7. By 2010 three-quarters of IT shops will demand PC hardware that meets lower carbon emission standards<\/li>\n
  8. By 2011, large global enterprises will require suppliers to prove their “green credentials” via an audited process<\/li>\n
  9. By 2010, user preferences will drive IT purchasing decisions<\/li>\n
  10. By 2011, low-cost 3D printers will become commonplace in home and business<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Microsoft is likely not happy with the prediction of Apple garnering more computer market share or the suggestion that mobile devices, most of which are not tied to Windows, will continue to make inroads into the Windows-dominated laptop computer environment.<\/p>\n

    But the top three predictions of more Open Source, more SaaS and more cloud-based infrastructure seem right on.
    \nAlthough the exact percentages are anyone’s guess, the trend is clearly there.<\/p>\n
