What criteria should you use in selecting a monitoring a cloud service to determine how well it is performing?<\/p>\n

Cloud metrics can provide useful information to both customers and service providers and stakeholders all understand.<\/p>\n

A recent NIST press release said that <\/a>“new cloud computing providers and services are entering the market at a dizzying pace. \u00a0Different organizations and groups often use the same cloud computing terms with slightly different, or even contradictory meanings, leading to confusion among cloud service providers, customer and carriers. The lack of clear definitions for cloud computing terms makes them inherently immeasurable.”<\/p>\n

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently released a draft of a model<\/a> for developing cloud metrics that define an objective way for measuring cloud capabilities and performance.<\/p>\n

Frederic de Vaulx<\/a>, head of the cloud metric NIST working group, said that<\/a>\u00a0“being able to have measurable services will allow us to, down the road, be able to have cloud services as a commodity and be able to provide cloud services with contractual agreements.”<\/p>\n

Separately, Thomas Erl,<\/a> Zaigham Mahmood<\/a> and Ricardo Puttini<\/a> in the book Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology and Architecture<\/a>, as reviewed <\/a>by Joe McKendrick<\/a>, identified some of the following cloud metrics:<\/p>\n
