Gartner estimates<\/a> that in 2008 Enterprise Search will bring in $989.7 million. It’s interesting that that amount is less than what Microsoft plans to pay for just one vendor in the Enterprise Search space. Microsoft’s offer to buy Norway’s Fast Search and Transfer (FAST) was $1.2 billion. FAST’s total market share comes in at just 18 percent.<\/p>\n

Gartner says that the search market has been revitalized and is now growing at an annual rate of 15 percent each year. They expect the rate to start slowing to single digit growth. Gartner also predicts that Microsoft’s acquisition of FAST is just the beginning of a wave of consolidation.<\/p>\n

Autonomy has 21 percent of the market, FAST has 18 percent, Google has 15 percent, Endeca is at 6 percent, and IBM trails with just 4 percent. Gartner counts more than 50 vendors in the market.<\/p>\n

Enterprise Search strategies and products vary widely. FAST and Endeca are very high-end products that rely on complex algorithms. Other vendors target niche areas where data is stored in specialized formats. It will be some time before a dominant player emerges in this space.<\/p>\n
