Scientists, entrepreneurs, futurists and investors have joined together to issue a warning about what the future of technology may bring. \u00a0Without oversight and understanding, technology like artificial intelligence may overreach it’s intended purpose and unleash unwanted safety and social problems.<\/p>\n

A recent signed open letter by the group known as the ‘Future of Life<\/a>‘ institute, wrote that “the potential benefits are huge, since everything that civilization has to offer is a product of human intelligence; we cannot predict what we might achieve when this intelligence is magnified by the tools AI may provide, but the eradication of disease and poverty are not unfathomable. Because of the great potential of AI, it is important to research how to reap its benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls…\u00a0Our AI systems must do what we want them to do.”<\/p>\n

As many as 150 start up companies<\/a> are currently looking at ways to advance and build businesses with artificial intelligence. \u00a0But the FLI letter warns that designs to use the technology need not only consider the computer science and hardware issues but also consider social, economic, legal and security ramifications of what the technology might bring.<\/p>\n

Some of the notable people to sign onto the open letter include Stephen Hawking<\/a>, Elon Musk<\/a> and\u00a0Jaan Tallinn<\/a>. \u00a0In the past, Hawking has warned that AI had the potential to\u00a0<\/a>“spell the end of the human race.”<\/p>\n

Stephen Hawking wrote that <\/a>“one can imagine such technology outsmarting financial markets, out-inventing human researchers, out-manipulating human leaders, and developing weapons we cannot even understand.”<\/p>\n
