Convergence of new technologies. \u00a0IDC calls it the ‘Third Platform’<\/a>. \u00a0Gartner refers to the “Nexus of Forces<\/a>“. \u00a0Forrester talks about the Mobile Mind Shift<\/a>. \u00a0Yet another term or buzzword<\/a>, and one that is used frequently by CapGemini<\/a>, \u00a0 is SMAC <\/a>— short for Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud.<\/p>\n

SMAC is a description for how many businesses are implementing technology strategies around Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud. \u00a0These new technologies are bringing higher \u00a0business productivity and better engagement with customers. \u00a0By one estimate<\/a>, SMAC will account for $5 trillion of IT customer spending. \u00a0Cognizant c<\/a>alls\u00a0SMAC the formula for the ‘future of work’.<\/p>\n

A CapGemini report<\/a> found that “SMAC technologies\u00a0are redefining enterprise IT and will remain the driving force of enterprise level\u00a0IT for decades to come. The combined technologies of the SMAC stack\u00a0erase geographical barriers, cut costs, and enhance the operations of any\u00a0given business. SMAC technologies are transforming companies today, while\u00a0simultaneously preparing them for the business challenges of tomorrow.”<\/p>\n

Theresa Payton<\/a>, former White House CIO, said that “each element of SMAC will and is having an impact on corporate data centers…. There is less daily operations and maintenance required when using a valid cloud provider or infrastructure provider.”<\/p>\n

Adopting new technologies though is not always easy. \u00a0For example,\u00a0Lois Coatney<\/a>, partner with Information Services Group (ISG), said that <\/a>“integrating SMAC technologies increases the number of providers involved in the service delivery chain. Moreover, the new providers are delivering new technologies and have different business models, and this further complicates matter. \u00a0So it’s not just a matter of bringing more providers into the mix. It’s bringing in a new set of players who do things differently.”<\/p>\n
