By 2020, Gartner expects that there will be about a quarter billion connected cars<\/a>, vehicles on the road connected to the internet.<\/p>\n

James F. Hines<\/a>, research director at Gartner, said that “the connected car is already a reality, and in-vehicle wireless connectivity is rapidly expanding from luxury models and premium brands, to high-volume mid-market models. \u00a0The increased consumption and creation of digital content within the vehicle will drive the need for more sophisticated infotainment systems, creating opportunities for application processors, graphics accelerators, displays and human-machine interface technologies. \u00a0At the same time, new concepts of mobility and vehicle usage will lead to new business models and expansion of alternatives to car ownership, especially in urban environments.”<\/p>\n

Nilesh Parekh<\/a>,\u00a0Qualcomm’s head of product management for connected cars, said that<\/a> “if you look at application processor requirements inside a car, it’s very similar to what you need for mobile,” he said. “It needs to be power efficient, with a fully integrated CPU, GPU … and multimedia functions.”<\/p>\n

General Motors already offers<\/a> internet connection in the Chevrolet Malibu with OnStar and AT&T. \u00a0Both Audi <\/a>and Tesla <\/a>have a similar deal with AT&T. \u00a0Hyundai has wi-fi connectivity through Verizon<\/a>. \u00a0Chrysler is working with Sprint<\/a> to offer connectivity.<\/p>\n

A 2014 report by Infonetics<\/a> found that nearly 90 percent of the revenues currently seen by machine-to-machine (M2M) service providers comes from the connected vehicle industry.<\/p>\n
