The growth in the number of smartphones, wearable technologies and machine-to-machine communications is fueling huge growth in the internet bandwidth. \u00a0Cisco estimates<\/a> that 88 percent of the internet traffic last year can be attributed to this kind of “smart” bandwidth. \u00a0And over the next four years, the extent of this kind of traffic is expected to grow to 97 percent of all data traffic.<\/p>\n

By 2020 Cisco estimates that there will be 5.2 billion mobile user with 11.5 billion mobile devices. \u00a0These mobile devices will be creating more than 292 exabytes of data annually and mobile data traffic is expected to increase by a factor of ten. \u00a0Mobile video alone is expected to account for 72 percent of global mobile data traffic. \u00a0By 2017 Voice ober Wi-Fi is expected to exceed LTE voice communication data and will surpass Voice over Wi-Fi in total number of minutes used by 2018.<\/p>\n

The Cisco report finds that “the explosion of mobile applications and phenomenal adoption of mobile connectivity by end users on the one hand, and the need for optimized bandwidth management and network monetization on the other, is fueling the growth of global 4G deployments and adoption. \u00a0The next five years are projected to provide unabated mobile video adoption. \u00a0Backhaul capacity must increase so mobile broadband, data access, and video services can effectively support consumer usage trends and keep mobile infrastructure costs in check.”<\/p>\n
