It’s hard to keep up with technology. \u00a0But that’s not stopping businesses from trying. \u00a0Only two years after the initial release of the open-source Docker<\/a> project, already 70 percent of companies <\/a>say that they’re either already using it or evaluating it — only 7 percent say that they’ve never heard of the technology. \u00a0Early adopters like ECM software maker Nuxeo <\/a>have been actively using Docker technology for more than one year.<\/p>\n

Docker Containers<\/p><\/div>\n

Docker<\/a>, the \u2018Linux Container Engine<\/a>\u2019, is open-source Linux technology that can package all components needed by an application into a single container which can then be easily moved between cloud platforms, virtual machines, or physical bare-metal servers. \u00a0Docker allows software to be deployable across a wide range of environments yet doesn\u2019t require platform vendors to conform to specific cloud or VM requirements. \u00a0Docker runs on all\u00a0major Linux distributions, including Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, Suse and Arch.<\/p>\n

Mark Davis<\/a>, CEO of\u00a0ClusterHQ<\/a>, said that<\/a>\u00a0“Containers are exciting and probably the next big wave of how we build infrastructure applications, how we build the server side of mobile distributed applications. But it’s still a technology base that’s in its infancy.”<\/p>\n

Bob Quillin<\/a>,\u00a0CEO and Co-founder of\u00a0StackEngine\u00a0<\/a>,\u00a0said that<\/a>\u00a0“it is clear that Docker has penetrated both the enterprise and the VMware user base, but concerns and challenges still remain: a lack of operational tools for production and security visibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

David Marshall<\/a>, founder of VMblog, said that<\/a>\u00a0“with Docker, we’re seeing a different adoption model from recent technology initiatives such as the cloud, which was in large part top-down, pushed by executive CIO initiatives or financial management. \u00a0Docker usage, on the other hand, is being driven from the middle out, either by middle management or grassroots efforts.”<\/p>\n
