Metadata tagging and data repostoreis are being integrated into SOA<\/a> tool vendor products at a rapid pace.\u00a0 The premise for why they’re doing this is that today’s SOA landscape consists of many reusable Web Services that can’t be easily found, and once located, require a lot more information to use than what’s available in something like a raw WSDL<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The companies that are adding metadata repositories include BEA Systems<\/a> with their acqusition of the FlashLine<\/a> metadata repository.\u00a0 webMethods<\/a> acquired Cerebra<\/a> for embedding into their Fabric product.\u00a0 And IBM<\/a> has announced that they plan\u00a0to develop\u00a0the Service Registry and Repository<\/a> component for WebSphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0idea given for the addition of metadata repostories is that software reuse of services is being roadblocked because\u00a0service\u00a0components are not\u00a0easily discoverable.\u00a0 While Web Service discovery is probably a Use Case that is sure to become more important as adoption of SOA picks up, and for companies that have adopted large-scale SOA this may be an issue, but finding out what services are available is usually not the problem.\u00a0 Today most companies using SOA don’t have a list of services like saleforce.com’s AppExchange<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0Most companies are\u00a0more often than not still in the pilot-program stage, but that is sure to change as more and more Web-Service-based applications are developed.<\/p>\n

The value today of metadata repositories is to better document usage and system relationships of the services.\u00a0 More often than not web services are being\u00a0‘discovered’ today from comments\u00a0and discussions that come up during\u00a0meetings or in email, and when word gets out that XYZ services are being used on project A, then project B people want to be able to use those services too.\u00a0 But how?\u00a0 And who has permission to access them?\u00a0 And are there examples for how to use them?\u00a0 And what kind of dependencies\u00a0exist between them?\u00a0 Where is the data\u00a0coming from and how real-time is it?\u00a0\u00a0 How can\u00a0users\/developers be notified if the interface or internal service logic of a service is changed or updated?<\/p>\n

Providing detailed usage information and governance policies for the services offers great\u00a0value.\u00a0 WSDLs were not designed to hold that kind of information and the UDDI<\/a> concept hasn’t really caught on.\u00a0 As SOA deployments grow in size and complexity tools like those offered by Metadata repositories will be ready.<\/p>\n
