Revenues from Business Intelligence software grew at a 9 percent rate in 2013 and that level of growth is expected to stay constant through 2018, averaging 8.7 percent. \u00a0Within the next two years a majority of business users and analysts will gain access to self-service tools for performing data analysis. \u00a0That’s the outlook of the Business Intelligence (BI) software platform market according to Gartner. \u00a0The report is available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Gartner report found that interest among business leaders was flat and actually fell slightly in 2014 compared to 2013, 42 percent versus 45 percent for 2013.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, the leaders in Gartner’s BI Magic Quadrant, Tableau Software<\/a> and Qlik<\/a>, are often regarded as ‘light-weight’ when compared to more traditional and more full-featured BI platforms like Cognos or BusinessObjects. \u00a0Gartner judged the ease of use and the ability to easily deploy these tools to be more important than the features which they lacked, making them more valuable and useful to businesses. \u00a0More traditional BI products are often more narrow in how they can be applied and more difficult to use. \u00a0Part of the reason for the bias towards ease of use was the fact that BI products are\u00a0“increasingly being directed at business analysts and ‘citizen data scientists.'”<\/p>\n

Gartner\u00a0found that <\/a>“the transition is to platforms that can be rapidly implemented and can be used by either analysts and business users, to find insights quickly, or by IT to quickly build analytics content to meet business requirements to deliver more timely business benefits. Gartner estimates that more than half of net new purchasing is data-discovery-driven. \u00a0This shift to a decentralised model that is empowering more business users also drives the need for a governed data discovery approach.”<\/p>\n
