While not stunning, IDC reports<\/a> that the worldwide growth in the server market in fourth quarter 2014 increased to $14.5 billion at the end of 2014 ($50.9 billion for all of 2014), showing a solid annual growth rate of over 2 percent. \u00a0The growth is fueled in part by the needs from growing cloud vendors, growth in China, and also the need for businesses to keep hardware current by businesses going through their refresh cycle. \u00a0IDC estimates that there was an all time high number of servers shipped in 2014 of 9.2 million, a 2.9 percent gain over the 2013 results.<\/p>\n

The market leader for servers is HP, holding 26.8 percent market share, followed by Dell with 16.7 percent market share, and then IBM with a 13.7 percent share of the market. \u00a0Dell overtook IBM for second place in this most recent ranking.<\/p>\n

Matt Eastwood<\/a>, IDC vice president, said that<\/a>\u00a0“IDC continues to see a server market that is largely about serving the needs of two separate and distinct sets of customer workloads. \u00a0Traditional 2nd Platform workloads are driving the need for richly configured integrated systems aimed at driving significant levels of consolidation while also enabling advanced management and automation in the datacenter.”<\/p>\n
