Cloud infrastructure spending grew by 14.4 percent year over year in the fourth quarter 2014 to $8 billion, according to IDC<\/a>. \u00a0Cloud infrastructure includes\u00a0server, disk storage, and ethernet switches.<\/p>\n

But much of the money spent on cloud computing has been wasted<\/a>. \u00a0When businesses spin up servers with more power or capacity that are really required, that extra capacity will not be fully utilized. \u00a0Often businesses are sloppy in managing their virtual servers, not shutting them down in off hours when they’re not needed.<\/p>\n

Boris Goldberg<\/a>, co-founder and chief technology officer at Cloudyn Ltd., estimates<\/a> that 60 percent of cloud software servers could be eliminated or terminated because their not being used.<\/p>\n

Richard Davies<\/a>, CEO of ElasticHosts<\/a>, said that<\/a> “a large proportion of cloud users are paying for cloud services that they never fully utilize… \u00a0This is because the prevalent model for IaaS is based on the use of virtual machines, where compute is paid for based on what is provisioned, but this is at best 50% utilised by typical workloads. \u00a0However, recent updates to the Linux kernel mean containerized servers can now be offered to cloud IaaS customers, where they are only charged for capacity they actually use, rather than what they provision, and as a result this wasted IaaS capacity could be eliminated.”<\/p>\n

Davies said that “the sooner the cloud industry unlocks the potential of containers, the quicker we will evolve to the next generation of the cloud, and the more customers that will benefit.”<\/p>\n
