Google has been struggling to come up with the right formula in Enterprise Search for some time. Google’s search algorithms have blown away competitors in Internet Search, but within the Enterprise, those same algorithms haven’t worked well. Their Google Search appliance has been modestly successful. Now Microsoft has come up with a product that looks like it will pressure Google in this space.<\/p>\n

Microsoft has targeted Google’s Search appliance with the announcement of the Microsoft Search Server 2008<\/a>. It’s too early to see if the product can live up to demos and hype, but Forrester is calling it ‘disruptive’. <\/p>\n

Though free, MSSE has a substantial set of capabilities, most notably its connectivity to many intranet- and Internet-based resources, including Microsoft Exchange, IBM\u2019s Lotus Notes, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, and even EMC\u2019s Documentum and IBM\u2019s FileNet enterprise content management systems. MSSE trumps Google\u2019s search appliances by offering a stronger set of administration, reporting, and connectivity features, and it can be upgraded to the Microsoft Search Server 2008 (MSS) licensed version that enables multiserver scalability and high availability.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

MSSE is expected to be able to handle 500,000 documents on a 3Ghz processor machine with 4 Gig of memory. The solution is based on the free MSSE and free MS SQL Express database. The for-fee version of MSS gives you load balancing and clustering. But the free version will be a pretty attractive offering to small companies and departments.<\/p>\n
