Computing: Near-Term Prediction of Cloud Trends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a little more than a decade since <a title=\"Salesforce.com No Software\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salesforce.com\/eu\/company\/news-press\/press-releases\/2002\/12\/021211.jsp\" target=\"_blank\">Salesforce.com first announced their vision of a &#8220;no software&#8221; world<\/a>, cloud computing has seen incredible growth. \u00a0Early-on doubters like Oracle&#8217;s <a title=\"Larry Ellison on Cloud Computing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/ctg\/news\/2372607\/oracles-cloud-is-the-entire-earth-and-all-our-rivals-need-us-proclaims-larry-ellison\" target=\"_blank\">Larry Ellison<\/a> have made an about face from disparaging the technology to embracing it. \u00a0<a title=\"Oracle to surpass Salesforce.com\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.barrons.com\/techtraderdaily\/2015\/03\/18\/oracle-rising-ellison-boasts-passing-salesforce-passed-workday-op-margin-in-focus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ellison now predicts <\/a>that Oracle will surpass Salesforce.com in new sales of cloud products this year.<\/p>\n<p>Where will cloud computing go over the next five years?<\/p>\n<p>Industry pundit <a title=\"David Linthicum bio\" href=\"http:\/\/www.davidlinthicum.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Linthicum<\/a> recently made <a title=\"Near-term Cloud Computing Predictions\" href=\"http:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/2916564\/cloud-computing\/4-predictions-for-the-immediate-future-of-cloud-computing.html\" target=\"_blank\">four predictions for InfoWorld<\/a> of what we can expect fairly near term for cloud computing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AWS, Microsoft and Google will continue to be the cloud vendors of choice in the near term. \u00a0The lead that these three already have in the technology and the huge amounts of money that they continue to pump into growth will make competition by smaller players difficult.<\/li>\n<li>Cloud vendor competitors to the main three will need to seek out specific niches to grow their businesses from. \u00a0Smaller cloud vendors will focus on specific verticals and use cases. \u00a0They&#8217;ll also likely more boldly use newer or emerging cloud technologies like containers.<\/li>\n<li>Businesses beginning to use the cloud will find that they&#8217;re not saving as much as they originally expected. \u00a0Total costs spread over multiple years need to be considered. \u00a0Some businesses may drop out of cloud computing or restructure to use hybrid architectures. \u00a0Annual subscription pricing, support and integration costs all need to be factored in. \u00a0A lot depends on use cases and actual usage scenarios as to whether or not using the cloud results in overall savings or not.<\/li>\n<li>Businesses will increasingly move away from private-only cloud implementations. \u00a0The trend will be toward hybrid or multi-cloud platforms in order to achieve better efficiency and scalability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"lightsocial_container\"><div class=\"lightsocial_element\"><a class=\"lightsocial_a\"
