In 2011 in a whitepaper for AIIM, Geoffrey Moore<\/a> coined the terms <\/a>“System of Record” and “System of Engagement”. \u00a0Since then these terms have been picked up by and used frequently by analysts and organizations like Forrester, AIIM, HP and IBM.<\/p>\n

A System of Record<\/em> is a traditional business software application designed so that the data is at all times correct and consistent. \u00a0Think financial, manufacturing or HR databases. \u00a0These are apps\u00a0provide trustworthy reference information\u00a0that let you\u00a0look up\u00a0a piece of data.<\/p>\n

Systems of Engagement<\/em>, on the other hand, are applications that provide collaborative tools that allow\u00a0people\u00a0to network and share opinions and ideas. \u00a0Think of email, Twitter, Facebook and the variety of social networking apps.<\/p>\n

IBM has added\u00a0another similar term<\/a> to the discussion to describe the analytics and Big Data products that are increasingly popping up. \u00a0The term they’re using is: “System of Insight”. \u00a0Forrester and companies like HortonWorks have picked up on it.<\/p>\n

A System of Insight is able to access troves of corporate data and apply analytics to create new insights in how the company works and in identifying how the business can improve. \u00a0Eric Knorr<\/a> of Infoworld explains that<\/a> “the idea is to create business value by keeping analytics turned on all the time, so businesses can better target customers, predict system failures, or divine new patterns in everything from patients\u2019 vital signs to supply chain seasonality.”<\/p>\n

Hans Peter Vibe<\/a>, CTO at IBM said that<\/a> “systems of insight will revolutionize the industry.”<\/p>\n
