href=\"http:\/\/www.bmbf.de\/en\/19955.php\" target=\"_blank\"> started in Germany <\/a>and is now being used by analysts like<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/insights\/manufacturing\/Manufacturings_next_act?cid=other-eml-alt-mip-mck-oth-1506\" target=\"_blank\"> McKinsey<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/newsroom\/id\/3054921\" target=\"_blank\">Gartner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But if we&#8217;re already at 4.0, then what were the milestones that made up Industry 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0? \u00a0In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/industry-4-0-its-all-about-information-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\">piece for ZDNet<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/joemckendrick\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe McKendrick<\/a> summarizes it nicely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Industry 1.0: Water\/steam power<\/li>\n<li>Industry 2.0: Electric power<\/li>\n<li>Industry 3.0: Computing power<\/li>\n<li>Industry 4:0: Internet of Things (IoT) power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The components that are work together to drive\u00a0this fourth phase of innovation include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Collaboration tools<\/li>\n<li>The Internet of Things<\/li>\n<li>Cybersecurity<\/li>\n<li>The Cloud<\/li>\n<li>Big Data Analytics<\/li>\n<li>Simulation<\/li>\n<li>Robots<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/w3.siemens.co.uk\/home\/uk\/en\/afi\/conference\/pages\/brianhollidaybiography.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Holliday<\/a>, division director of Siemens Industry Automation, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theengineer.co.uk\/manufacturing\/automation\/industry-40-the-next-industrial-revolution\/1016696.article#ixzz3dzTuB4kU\" target=\"_blank\">said that<\/a> &#8220;Industry 4.0 is a 20-year journey. \u00a0It\u2019s not something that\u2019s going to come about in two or five year\u2019s time \u2026 But the work that goes in now to create the platforms, the protocols and the connections between the smart devices that will enable the digitally designed factory environments, that is envisaged by programs like Industry 4.0.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div
