Data warehousing traditionally required a company to extract and download huge volumes of data from various business software systems into a central repository for analysis. \u00a0The process to prep the data was slow which meant that the\u00a0analysis was\u00a0always run against data that was already partially stale.<\/p>\n

But recently we’re seeing a new generation of data warehousing, one based on cloud computing. \u00a0This week saw the announcement of general availability of Snowflake<\/a>. \u00a0Snowflake is a cloud-based data warehouse running on Amazon AWS. \u00a0The company is led by Microsoft veteran Bob Muglia<\/a>. \u00a0Snowflake received $26 million in funding in October 2014 and has received another round of $45 million<\/a> this past week.<\/p>\n

The Snowflake data warehouse is in direct competition with Microsoft’s Azure SQL Data Warehouse<\/a> and Amazon’s Redshift<\/a> cloud data warehouse.<\/p>\n

What’s unique about Snowflake among the crowd of other recent data-focused startups is that it isn’t based on Hadoop and it was built from scratch with the cloud in mind.<\/p>\n
